FAQ’s

Information for Merchants about Sunday Streets

Q: What can Merchants expect from Sunday Streets?

A: So far, merchants along Sunday Streets routes have been pleased to see an increase in business during and after the event hours.  Ferry Building Merchants reported up to a 300% increase in business. Bayview Merchants also enjoyed an increase in business and new customers drawn in from other neighborhoods and parts of the Bay Area.

Q: What are the hours?

A: The roadways of the route will be car free from 10am -2pm.  We work very closely with the SFPD and MTA to make sure that the event begins and ends on time.  Vehicle traffic returns immediately after the roads are clear of event participants.

Q: Will there be tow-a-way zones?

A: Yes.  Routes will be signed as no parking zones.  Signage will go up 1 week before the event and the no parking hours will be from 5 am that morning until after the event concludes.

Q: Will all cross streets be closed to cars?

A: No.  We will have intermittent traffic control at some intersections (see detailed map) and others will be closed.  We will have volunteers working with police and enforcement personnel to help provide local access to residents and businesses adjacent to the route.  There will be no vehicular access between 10 am and 2 pm on the route itself.

Q: What can I do during Sunday Streets to attract customers?

A: As we want local businesses to benefit from this event we have worked with City Departments so that businesses may place tables on the sidewalks in front of their stores without additional permits as long as there is a 48 inch path of travel on the sidewalk at all times. Once the event ends, sidewalks need to be cleared of tables that are not a regular part of your businesses.

Q: Will there be restrooms provided?

A: Yes.  There will be porta-potties along the route.

Q:  What about trash?

A: We work with the Dept of Public Works to put out extra trash and recycling bins and they are removed after the event. Since this is not a street fair with vendors selling products or people handing out paper we have not seen any littering problems.

Q: Will there be extra Police Officers?

A: We will have extra Police staffing at the levels recommended by Captain Tacchini of Mission District Station for general patrol. There will be a number of Police Officers and enforcement personnel
responsible for traffic control throughout the route.  In our past four events we have not had a single incident requiring Police intervention.  Sunday Streets is a low key family oriented event.
