From the Office
of the Mayor On behalf of the City and County of San Francisco, it is with great pleasure that I share with you one of our City’s newest and most exciting initiatives, Sunday Streets. Sunday Streets is considered an extension of our City’s Shape Up San Francisco program which encourages healthy eating and active living. As a logical next step toward our goal of a healthier San Francisco, the Sunday Streets initiative promises to achieve this same goal with even greater opportunities for our residents to participate in fitness programs and activities while also fostering more community interaction. Modeled on 25-year old program in Bogota, Columbia, this concept has spread to four continents and has proven wildly popular from Tokyo, Japan to Kiev, Ukraine. It will bring physical activity space to our neighborhoods on Sunday mornings, creating a route for thousands of local families, kids and adults to walk, jog, and bike, as well as participate in group exercise. It will offer safe, free and fun activities that will attract people from throughout our City and the entire Bay Area. We will hold two Sunday Streets events this summer on August 31 and September 14, 2008, utilizing a stretch of roadway connecting the Bayview to Chinatown and running along our City’s waterfront. We have been working with a broad coalition of city agencies and community based organizations to make this effort a success and we are planning a major public and media campaign to promote the events. We expect to attract tens of thousands of Bay Area residents. I will be personally participating in these events. Your participation is key to the success of this new bold community-based health initiative! With warmest regards,
Gavin Newsom |
